Mary Adams the Dress

31 E. 32nd St., nr. Madison Ave., Ste. 904; 212-473-0237; maryadamsthedress.com

From her Murray Hill studio, Adams creates dresses ($1,500 to $7,000) that go against every wedding-day convention. But brides who eschew basic white are fans—she works in hues like lime green and tangerine. Orders take three to six months. Off-the-rack alterations not included. By appointment only.

Michael's, The Consignment Shop for Women

1041 Madison Ave., nr. 79th St., second fl.; 212-737-7273; michaelsconsignment.com

Most bridal designers won’t accept returns—even if the big day is called off. And this shop is where many new or almost-new Vera Wang, Priscilla, and Badgley Mischka creations end up at far more modest prices than they commanded the first time around ($350 to $1,800). The catch? Each customer has a 30-minute time limit to try on up to five gowns.

Michelle New York Brides

396 Atlantic Ave., nr. Hoyt St. 718-643-1680; michellenewyork.com

Michelle Field’s gowns are romantic and understated ($2,500 to $5,000). If a customer doesn’t fall in love with a dress from the collection, Field does custom wedding gowns (starting at $2,000), as well as custom bridesmaid and flower-girl dresses (starting at $250).

Mika Inatome Custom Bridal

93 Reade St., nr. Church St., Ste. 2; 212-966-7777; mikainatome.com

After 22 years in business, Inatome has honed her specialty: slender mermaid gowns for women who like to dance. The airy, 3,000-square-foot loft is filled with more than 300 chic, modern dresses in floaty, fine textiles—like silk, satin, crepe, and chiffon ($1,700 to $5,000). Everything, including embroidery and beading, is done by hand. By appointment only.

Mom's Night Out

147 E. 72nd St., nr. Lexington Ave., second fl.; 212-744-6667; momsnightout.com

The elegant choice for pregnant brides, Mom’s Night Out carries sophisticated maternity styles ($425 to $1,800). In addition to a few samples from European collections, they have an in-house designer and seamstress. Fittings take place two to three weeks before the wedding.

Morgane Le Fay

67 Wooster St., nr. Spring St. (various locations); 212-879-9700; morganelefay.com

Liliana Casabal’s collection ($1,100 to $4,400) features light, ethereal fabrics that play with opaque and transparent materials like ivory silk, taffeta, duchesse satin, and chiffon. Her clients range from Björk to Dame Helen Mirren. Alterations not included for the prêt-à-porter collection.

Nicole Miller

77 Greene St., nr. Spring St., 212-219-1825; nicolemiller.com

Miller’s understated and sleek gowns appeal to the free-spirited bride. The bridal salon prides itself on a quick turnaround and shorter lead time. Base prices run from $595 to $2,600. Alterations not included. Tailoring is done off-site.

Oscar de la Renta

oscardelarenta.com

Oscar de la Renta has long been huge in Hollywood and within the political set. But with his well-rounded 2009 bridal collection (prices start at $3,300), de la Renta appeals to everyone else with couture sensibilities. His ever-classic bridal collection is available at Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue and Mark Ingram Bridal Atelier. Alterations dependent on location.

Paula Varsalona for the Bride

1375 Broadway, at 37th St., fifth fl., 800-761-1707; paulavarsalona.com

Paula Varsalona adorns her dresses with hand-rolled organdy flowers and imported lace. Last season the V collection was more formal (strapless gowns with sculpted bodices) and the Madison collection showcased embroidery, draped fabric, and beading (from $1,500). Alterations not included.

Priscilla of Boston

264 W. 40th St., nr. Eighth Ave., second fl. 212-997-3956

The elegant cuts of the Priscilla of Boston gowns make them good for New York weddings ($3,000 to $8,000); Melissa Sweet gowns are more romantic and work well for destination weddings ($3,000 to $8,000); and the Platinum collection, with lots of lace and sparkle, is perfect for those who need more glamour ($4,500 to $9,000).

Pronovias

14 E. 52nd St., nr. Fifth Ave., 212-897-6393; pronovias.com

Brides no longer have to take an eight-hour flight just to get their hands on a Pronovias gown. The Barcelona-based bridal behemoth recently opened this dazzling 2,300-square-foot New York flagship store. Their 2009 collection of gowns ($1,800-$15,000), are each anchored by elements of subtle lace or delicate ruffles.

Reem Acra

14 E. 60th St., nr. Madison Ave.; 212-308-8760; reemacra.com

Acra’s designs, known for their detailed beadwork and embroidery, have a decidedly old-world glamour and pared-down sophistication. Brides lust after the custom couture gowns (from $20,000) and ready-to-wear, starting at $3,000. Alterations not included.

RK Bridal

318 W. 39th St., nr. Eighth Ave.; 212-947-1155; rkbridal.com

This bustling, 11,000-square-foot superstore has great prices on wedding dresses for brides willing to search through a thousand different styles ($300 to $3,000)—they’ll even lower a gown’s price to match the cost of the same gown offered elsewhere for less. Alterations not included.
