Prada

724 Fifth Ave., nr. 56th St., and various locations; 212-664-0010; prada.com

Narrow black suits (about $2,300), dress shirts (about $375), and nylon accessories are staples at Prada. Prada’s single tuxedo, with a three-button jacket, is about $3,100—but their streamlined tailoring is worth the splurge.

Primo

Rocco Ciccarelli, a custom tailor for over 50 years, makes clothing for other tailors all over the city—he’ll also make a suit, jacket, and overcoat for clients directly. With well over 1,000 fabrics to choose from, grooms are sure to find what they want. Prices upon request.

Ralph Lauren

867 Madison Ave., at 72nd St.; 212-606-2100; polo.com

Ralph Lauren is a great source for sharp, formal attire that’s just fashionable enough. The Purple Label tuxedo comes in superluxurious wool with silk lapels ($4,000). The Black Label tuxedo, a slim-cut flat-front version, starts at $1,995. Any of the three Polo styles of tuxedo is a downright bargain at $1,095.

Rothmans

200 Park Ave. S., at 17th St.; 212-777-7400; rothmansny.com

This independent, user-friendly store carries suits ($299 to $995) and tuxedos ($300 to $1,250) by big-name menswear designers like Canali, Hugo Boss, and the fashionable Ted Baker. Varvatos tuxedos are especially popular.

Saint Laurie Merchant Tailors

22 W. 32nd St., nr. Fifth Ave., fifth fl.; 212-6431916; saintlaurie.com

They’ve been custom-making suits and tuxes since 1913—they even have an exclusive shade of midnight blue fabric woven for them in England—but grooms can expect to find modern and smart styles at this bona fide New York tailor. It takes about six weeks to make the suits ($1,500 to $2,000), but they can also do rush orders if need be; all are made on the premises.

Salvatore Ferragamo

655 Fifth Ave., at 52nd St.; 212-759-3822; ferragamo.com

The venerable Italian company’s three styles of sleek, wedding-appropriate suits (from $1,300) exude European panache. Tuxedo options range from basic black ($2,450) to a trendy navy velvet, two-button, notch-lapel version ($2,400). And their vast catalog of ties make for superb groomsmen gifts.

Seize sur Vingt

243 Elizabeth St., nr. Prince St.; 212-343-0476; 16sur20.com

Hipsters swear by Seize sur Vingt’s specialty: crisp, tailored dress shirts in a spectrum of colors. For formal weddings, grooms can select made-to-measure suits (from $1,750) or customize one of three tuxedo templates (from $2,350).

Thom Browne

100 Hudson St., nr. Franklin St.; 212-633-1197; thombrowne.com

For a groom that’s slightly offbeat, Thom Browne is the man to see. He designs sleek, cool suits—mostly cropped at the ankle, with narrow lapels—that stand out in a sea of buttoned-up guys. Grooms can choose from his existing line (starting at $3,800); suits made to measure, by appointment.

Thomas Pink

520 Madison Ave., at 53rd St., and various locations; 212-838-1928; thomaspink.com

This wardrobe mainstay for cosmopolitan businessmen offers an array of cuff links, cummerbunds, and bow ties; but the outfitter is most famous for its handsome shirts. The best-selling “Marcella” is made of white Egyptian-cotton piqué ($165). And grooms shouldn’t forget to ask about the made-to-order wedding collection.

Turnbull & Asser

42 E. 57th St., nr. Madison Ave.; 877-887-6285; turnbullandasser.com

This Britain-based shirtmaker is famous for its single-breasted, peak-lapel tuxedo in a wool-and-cashmere blend. They offer ready-made (from $3,295) and made-to-measure versions (from $3,600). Allow at least eight to ten weeks.

Yohji Yamamoto

103 Grand St., at Mercer St.; 212-966-9066; 1 Gansevoort St., nr. Eighth Ave. The military-style jackets by this famously minimalist Japanese designer are sometimes tweaked with extras like appliqué. Yamamoto’s Soho shop doesn’t carry tuxedos, but hip grooms go for his no-frills gabardine suits (from $2,500). The shop also stocks Italian-made, narrow-cut suits (from $1,650).
