sin-e.comFor years, your only option for catching the first outings by a hot new local band was to squeeze into the Mercury Lounge along with all the cell-phone-clutching A&R men. But since opening last year, Sin-é (formerly an Irish folkie club on St. Marks Place) has stolen the mantle of the hottest spot for up-and-comers as a result of the early support it showed bands like the Seconds and the Secret Machines. Sin-é isn’t much bigger than your neighborhood bar—and doesn’t even have a full liquor license. But the low cover (usually in the $10 range) and expansive bills (often four bands in a single night) add up to a walloping bang for your buck—even if your evening’s entertainment doesn’t turn out to be the second coming of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

From the 2004 Best of New York issue of New York Magazine
Competition breeds the best. If only one pizzeria existed in New York, of course, there’d be no real winning slice. Thankfully, we’ll never know what that sorry situation tastes like, since pizza—like dance parties, dog runs, and fried chicken—has to evolve upward here.
