Every good pedicure spot has a devoted following; Julia Roberts swears by Josephine Beauty Retreat, and downtown girls love Acqua Beauty Bar. But the adventurous go to Just Calm Down. Pedicures are done under a Moroccan tent, where feet are soaked in old Tuscan bowls. Grooming options include the Lady Godiva ($65), during which feet are dipped in a mixture of warm milk, marshmallows, and chocolate (don’t worry, they’ll give you a cup of hot chocolate to satisfy the cocoa cravings), and the Grape Gatsby ($70), an oenophile’s fantasy. A grape-seed scrub and fruit acids in a red-wine soak are used to slough off dead skin. And yes, a relaxing glass of wine is offered.

Competition breeds the best. If only one pizzeria existed in New York, of course, there’d be no real winning slice. Thankfully, we’ll never know what that sorry situation tastes like, since pizza—like dance parties, dog runs, and fried chicken—has to evolve upward here.
