Profile
Four decades ago in Hungary, Eva Devecsery was not only an expert couturier but also a weaver, because, as she puts it, “we had to do everything . . . we didn’t even have fabric.” These days, the charming Ms. Devecsery plies the needle for a rarefied clientele. (On one visit, we heard her pick up the phone and say, “Hello, Princess”—and it wasn’t a nickname.) She presides over a team of the city’s most nimble-fingered atelier of specialists who can often turn around a quickie job, like hemming a brand-new pair of trousers or an unlined skirt ($30 and up), in a day. Spend a little time having small alterations done here, and you’re going to start thinking about that custom suit, which can run from $2,000 to $4,000—and is well worth it.

While the rest of the city scurries up and down Broadway, these three micro–shopping districts remain blissfully unpicked-over.
