Korean-born designer Jean Yu’s creations have earned her scads of editorial coverage, fashion-world accolades, and even an exhibit at the Asia Society. Her sliver of a lingerie atelier, opened in 2001 and named after its nearly hidden Crosby street address, has raw wood floors that give way to a pleasant courtyard space in back. Demure displays showcase her ethereal, handmade creations, with the bras, panties, slips and dressing gowns hung on simple hangers and fixed upon bare walls. You won’t find bulky padding or restrictive underwire here, just exquisite garments made from fine transparent silk and chiffon, most employing thin ribbons and seams instead of elastic. (Large-busted women should look elsewhere for more supportive pieces.) Thankfully the store does not specialize in flashy colors, bows, and other accoutrements commonly associated with so-called sexy lingerie. Yu’s pieces are based on spare sculptural forms like triangles and rectangles, each created to match particular skin tones in beige, peach, black, and brown. Yu offers made-to-measure services by appointment.
Korean-born designer Jean Yu understands a woman's body well: Her lovely lingerie is fashioned out of whisper-weight chiffon, charmeuse, and the like, with ribbons and seams instead of elastic to ensure a comfortable fit. Especially luxe are her made-to-measure sets.
Warm, dry, stylish options for braving the slush.
