This “definitive restoration” of Max Ophüls’s 1955 masterpiece—a financial disaster that helped kill the director—gives us the gorgeously stylized story of a famous courtesan–the scandalized lover of men both famous and obscure. In the end, Ophüls’s heroine remains magnificently mysterious. Some critics consider it the greatest film of all time.
