Celebrity stylist Ted Gibson might have built his reputation manipulating the manes of Hollywood’s most recognizable actresses (Angelina Jolie, Jessica Simpson, Keira Knightley….), but it’s his skill at elevating mere mortals to glossy-tressed glamour that has earned his salon its loyal fan base. Imbued with a warm and accommodating aesthetic by designer Kimberly Peck, the real appeal of his airy salon lies in the details: the wall behind the reception desk ripples in cascading white waves, a buttery brown leather banquet sandwiches glossy fashion publications (with Gibson’s star clients adorning the covers), and soft pink backlighting bathes the room in a rosy glow; and gives its occupants an instant face lift. After checking in, guests are guided to private dressing rooms to trade their daywear for satiny service kimonos the color of Godiva truffles, and treated to complimentary hand, scalp, and shoulder massages performed with Aveda oils as they await their services. Top color mixologist Jason Backe, Gibson’s fellow Aveda educator, and his team begin each client’s transformation, painting shimmering, dramatic highlights with a judicious hand. Once they’re satisfied, Gibson or one of his trained stylists takes over, making the exact snips that leave the perfect style; and their client with a taste of her star power.
ExtraGet star treatment without the price tag by dropping in on Academy Mondays. That’s when junior stylists provide cut and color services starting at $55.
Bridal Hair
The bridal specialists at this salon-home of celebrity- and runway-stylist Gibson-excel at creating updos, working with hairpieces, and experimenting with different looks to get exactly what the bride wants. After a complimentary consultation at the lavish Gramercy Park salon eight to ten weeks before the wedding, a stylist will try multiple looks during a trial run and take digital photos of each. Gibson himself will stay through the wedding to perform any flat-iron touch-ups necessary before the reception.
