Profile

The owners of Session 73 have created something of a nightlife mutt by crossbreeding a below 14th Street club formula with an Upper East Side clientele. The deep space unfolds with a long bar on one side and, on the other, a section of date-worthy tables, a handful of velour chairs and couches and a small stage on which homegrown cover bands preside. Indeed, on weekends, the space gets so cramped that the early-20s crowd is forced to stand in gridlock as squirming individuals navigate any wiggle room to get to the bathroom or the bar. Just off the main area is a lush, surprisingly quiet dining area—a reprieve from the cacophony—with an original tapas menu including cheese fondue. A room in the back offers a second bar, cushy banquette seating, a projection screen for sports, plus prints of jazz musicians. The weekday scene is more subdued when music acts tend towards the acoustic.
