Profile

Ground zero for the East Village rock-'n'-roll gay bar scene now that the dying ember known as the Cock has ceded to Eurotrash and non-locals, the Phoenix is a deliciously dark queer hall with a pool table, Ms. Pac-Man, and the requisite hipper-than-thou jukebox packed with Britpop, girl groups, vintage punk, and post-rock. Owned and operated by the former proprietors of neighborhood mainstay, the Bar, the Phoenix is crowded, cruisey and congenial on the weekends, when tattooed love gods and corn-fed roughnecks with Popeye forearms mix, mingle and make plans over pints of Hoegaarden. Sublimate your sexual frustrations at the combination Ms. Pac-Man/Galaga machine—it's the new safe sex!
