Named after a song in Cabaret, Don't Tell Mama is a true cabaret haunt. A narrow three-room suite—with a front piano bar, two side rooms for small-scale solo shows—this is where to see the famous as well as the wannabe famous. There are up to three performances nightly in the trio of cabaret theaters, but what makes Don't Tell Mama such a showstopper is the way Sidney Myer, its longtime booking agent, varies the diet. While he may be an American Songbook diehard, Myer also showcases rock 'n' roll vocalists, comedy groups, new musicals and highly respected impressionists. For popular long-running shows like Judy Garland Live! with Tommy Femia (female impersonation) and Seth Rudetsky's Broadway Chatterbox (a talk show live onstage), seating can be tighter than a Victorian corset. But usually the rooms are empty enough for every patron to garner his or her own table. So sit back, have a drink, enjoy the vocals, laugh at the jokes and come to the cabaret, old chum. — Leonard Jacobs
