Profile

What John Roebling’s demure first bridge was to the Brooklyn Bridge, bocce bar Floyd is to co-owners Jim Carden’s and Andy Templer’s new venture, a lodge-like tavern of monumental proportions where the two bocce courts are almost lost amidst other trappings of gentlemanly refinement. Wall-to-ceiling bookshelves stuffed with leatherbound volumes, an antique globe, a fireplace, and pressed-tin ceilings give the airy former furniture warehouse the feel of an explorers club, and the motif comes alive during nights when scientists conduct Mr. Wizard-style demonstrations. An indie-pop soundtrack lightens up all the dark wood while downstairs, where a curiosity cabinet displays an ostrich egg and a stuffed bird, likeminded bands play on a small stage also used for variety shows. If the abundant leather club chairs, Victorian couches, and duo of booths are occupied, there’s more seating in an alley patio outside. The upsized bar menu has Floyd’s signature beer-cheese and Ritz crackers, sirloin mini burgers and entrées that are well complimented by the impressive array of beers on tap as by something off the wine list.
